Alternative Futures for Florida

Florida continues to be in the midst of rapid change. The engine of change is population growth--mostly attributable to a combination of continued domestic and international immigration. This population growth becomes tangible when it results in land use change. This change can be existing developed areas being redeveloped to accommodate a higher density/higher intensity of use, or it can be conversion of agricultural lands or pristine areas to urban/suburban use.
The University of Florida’s GeoPlan Center has worked with three groups to explore the physical reality of this land use change trend. A statewide trend scenario was developed in association with 1000 Friends of Florida; eight alternative scenarios were developed in southwest Florida in association with the Southwest Florida Regional Stewardship Alliance; and four alternative scenarios were developed for the greater Orlando/Daytona Beach area in association with the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council and MyRegion.org. The process used by Geoplan will be discussed along with selected results.
