The Florida National Scenic Trail, Partnerships Make it Happen

Kent Wimmer, Liaison Officer
Florida Trail Association and the Florida National Scenic Trail

The Congressionally-designated Florida National Scenic Trail stretches some 1400 miles the length of Florida from the Everglades to Pensacola Beach.  Along the way the Florida Trail passes through the land of nearly every significant Federal, state and regional public land managing agency in Florida, over two dozen agencies and over 40 separate land management units. The Florida Trail represents a tripartite partnership with volunteer-based nonprofit Florida Trail Association whose volunteers build and maintain the trail, the USDA Forest Service which is the trail's Federal administrator and the and the two dozen agencies through whose land the trail passes.   Kent Wimmer will describe the partnerships upon which the Florida Trail is based.  These include use licences with private property owners, trail certification agreements with public and private landowners, Challenge Cost Share Agreements, and Inter-agency Cooperative agreements.   These agreements provide the foundation for these partnerships to work and the conduits for resources that are necessary to complete and maintain the trail.
